The menu page and the customer's payment app both need a connection. If the venue has Wi-Fi, a static Wi-Fi code lets people join it with one scan.
As a rule of thumb, at least a tenth as wide as the distance it is scanned from: a code people scan from two metres away should be about 20 cm across. The scannability check tells you if your design is too busy to read.
